“We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions.” (Psalms 20:5)
The psalmist’s prayer is this: “May the Lord fulfill all your petitions”. I say amen to that. The very nature of a petition or the definition of a petition tells us that it is about making a case or an appeal. The dictionary defines petition as “a formal written request made to an authority or organized body (such as a court)”; “a written request or call for change signed by many people in support of a shared cause or concern”; “an earnest request”; or “something asked or requested”.
If we apply this definition of petition to the psalmist’s prayer, then it means that the psalmist already assumes you have made your petitions to the only One who can grant your petition, God.
The word petition comes from the root word “miš’ālāh” meaning “a request”. It indicates a plea or solicitation for something. This flows with the same concept of pleading your case before the Lord.
In relation to Isaac, He pleaded his case before the Lord when he and his wife were in dire need of children. He sought the Lord, and the Lord heeded his plea.
“Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” (Genesis 25:20-21)
The bible did not give us the details of how he pleaded but he pleaded for his wife because she was barren, and the Lord granted his plea. Would you plead with the Lord regarding your matter? Will you present your case before the Lord for an answer, solution, breakthrough etc.? If Isaac can plead, you can plead! And if God who is no respecter of persons can grant Isaac’s plea, then, He will grant your plea.
In a similar manner to Isaac and along the same need as Isaac, Hannah also petitioned the Lord for a child and God granted her petition.
“For this child, I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore, I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he shall be lent to the LORD.” So, they worshiped the LORD there.” (1 Samuel 1:27-28)
Perhaps, God is waiting on you to plead your case like Isaac and Hannah. If they both got what they asked of the Lord, you will as well. It is not in the eloquence, intelligence, or bible verses you can quote off heart, it is about humility, honesty, and passionate desire for what you are requesting.
Like the psalmist, I pray for you that: “MAY THE LORD FULFILL ALL YOUR PETITIONS.”
Amen.
