The fear of death is the ultimate fear that anyone can have. Most of the known phobias (an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something) that people have is all rooted in the fear of death. Fear of heights; fear of enclosed places; fear of animals; fear of open spaces etc., they are all linked somehow to the fear of death.
These are all fears that chokes people, create anxiety, or makes it difficult for some to breathe in those circumstances but in it all, they are all the fear of death. Fear of death is medically referred to as “thanatophobia”.
As a Christian, it is important to know who the bible says about this fear and the price that has been paid to liberate you from this “fear”.
“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” (Hebrews 2:14-15)
Jesus shared in the nature of flesh and blood…that through death, He might destroy (or has destroyed) him who had the power of death, that is the devil, and release those who have been in bondage because of the fear of death.
Jesus destroyed the devil who had the power of death so, you and I can be released from the bondage called “fear of death”. This also confirms the power behind fears – tormenting fears – it is a spirit, and the spirit is of the devil.
We should declare like the psalmist in Psalm 23:
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)
Do not live in the fear of death! Everyone will eventually die unless Christ returns first but make sure you are living your life to the full and when the day of death comes, you will be in Jesus’ arms.
